It's a signaling mirror. Basically a thick heavy mirror with a hole in the middle for aiming. The idea was you would aim the reflection of the sun twords airplanes to get the pilot's attention and hopefully be rescued.

Maybe it's just me but in the after picture Ol George kinda looks like Gomer Pyle. I could just see him going "Well G-o-l-l-y"

@TheEC: This is the exact same thing I was thinking when I was reading this. I think their correlation is backwards. It should be more like; Drivers who are somewhat skilled but more agressive also like playing driving video games more than people who just drive to get from one place to another.

Maybe I'm the only one but personally I'd rather see the car companies putting out an "Official NASA Chase Car" option vs the current "Official NASCAR Pace Car" offering.

@pauljones: Well all I can say is I guess I am in the 10%. I have been driving a manual transmission car/truck every day for the last 5 years or so. @MrSmoofy: I saw that show also, it was actually very interesting to watch just how much work actually goes into something like this. Especially the part where they had to splice the new cable into the existing one.

I have the older non GPS version of this camera and it is a tough little camera. Last summer we put it's durability to the test by doing all kinds of random stuff like skipping it across a pool while recording a video... good times.
