Artoo is the linchpin of all the Star Wars stories - I have had this theory for quite a while now as well. That droid is instrumental in EVERY main aspect of the entire saga. He was apparently given full access to players, coaches, facilities, practices, film room, the like; since he was a former player, coach and a current announcer. They trusted him wayyyyyy too much - obvi.
