They're not the same, obviously, I just mean that they're equally crucial to the character of Spider-Man, which is to say not crucial at all. There's nothing about the character that's tied to his racial identity - you could change his skin colour and have that change be merely cosmetic.

Some of those characteristics are important to the character, others aren't. Spider powers are important. Him being an orphan is important. But his skin colour isn't just like, say, his hair colour or his height isn't. Hugh Jackman is a tall guy, Logan is short in the comics. No one thinks that should disqualify…
