I will not be watching that, ever.
I will not be watching that, ever.
You're projecting here. Nowhere have I said we should be awful to immigrants. We should expect them to be lawful, though. And whatever burdens of learning new languages I put on adult immigrants, I also put on adults born and raised here, including myself. You act as if I am suggesting we have a White Pride parade…
There needs to be SOME means of discouraging people from entering here illegally and STAYING here. People who sneak in here to work for a while, and then leave, I'm not all that concerned about. But if you are looking to stay here, it would help the nation if we make it clear that those who go about it the legal way…
You did the right thing.
This isn't a position paper and I'm neither a statistician nor a sociologist. I can only speak anecdotally, the same as you.
He doesn't strike me as particularly miserable, but on the other hand, he DOES spend a lot of time telling strangers how great his life is, never a good sign of happiness. But who knows how much of that is sincere and how much is advertising for his lifestyle and merchandise…
Nothing wrong with that per se. I dare say most musicians are like that. Simmons is obviously a smart guy, but he can also be obnoxious to the point where it stops being amusing.
Assuming this is sincere, and not trolling…if they are here, living and working (even just temporarily), they should be in the system, contributing with proper taxation, doing everything in accordance with the law of the land. People living in the shadows, concealing their residency status through forgery or…
He is usually the first to call his own music (and most rock music) disposable, ephemeral crap.
So what you're saying is, to avoid denigration for speaking less-than-perfect English, such immigrants choose instead to invite GREATER denigration by pretending to speak no English whatsoever? That makes no sense and actually plays to stereotypes.
Why would I NOT want them to leave, if they are here illegally?
And, setting aside hard-luck cases of people fleeing disaster and war and the like - dealing simply with voluntary immigrants, people choosing to be here - the burden should be on them to catch up with mainstream American society. It would be precisely the same if I chose to emigrate to China or India or Bulgaria. I…
And that's why I won't emigrate to a country where no one speaks my language.
Speaking of non-sequiturs.
In the case of voluntary immigration (obviously, refugees are a different scenario entirely), I think one should have to demonstrate some command of English before being granted residency, since lack of English skills pretty much torpedoes any long-term goals for self-sufficiency. I don't think this is too onerous a…
It IS the lingua franca which makes it the de facto "official language" to a lot of people.
Some dumbass notion by either Paramount or Lucasfilm to "maintain the integrity of the brand," I'm sure. Younger shelf stockers at Best Buy in 1999 might not have known that RAIDERS was the first Indy movie and filed that DVD alphabetically, away from the sequels.
Well, the retort to that I've heard is that those kinds of accommodations (let's just sum them up as the "Press 1 for English" phenomenon) are long-term impediments to assimilation and absorption of the English language and "American" culture, and over time will just create foreign language enclaves rather than help…
You've never lost patience with self-destructive people who keep taking your generosity for granted and who show no signs of WANTING to get better? I don't think the OP said it was right to tell addicts to kill themselves, just that the tendency to feel that way out of frustration is understandable.
I am not in favor of discouraging their native languages. I'm in favor of mandatory bilingualism (at least), cutting both ways. I'd love to see an America where kids of all backgrounds grow up learning and speaking two, three, four languages, with no one giving it a second thought.
