The main video game one leans VERY heavily Flavor of the Month.

The issue there is aside from living in the same city, there's little point in those subreddits existing.

Large subreddits do best with a specific topic and strict moderation.

As an example, the subreddit for Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes is FAR better than the official game forums (partially because they can actually post real complaints about the game without moderation), and the Pokemon Go stuff on Reddit has been great.

Unfortunately, a lot of them ARE liberal compared to the general population of the US.

I've actually found that while it leans heavily SWM, it also has a lot of White Knight action going on, especially when it comes to sexism.

Well, in the case of this specific site, 90% of the real content is reviews of media.

NPR on facebook does have comments though.

I think the bigger issue is if and when subreddits should be allowed to create their own rules and codes of normal behavior. That's the thing about reddit, a lot of the smaller subreddits are wonderful communities. But the default subreddits can be a mess, and there are really growing pains as a subreddit grows popular and suddenly the mods try to actually mod.
