This is exactly what I do. The car idles long enough for me to buckle in, put on what I want on the radio and then I’m going. Light throttle and low revs until the temp starts to come up. Only exception is if I parked outside and need to clear windows/defrost/whatever, then I will let it idle for a few minutes.

It’s a good car for the money, that’s for sure, but I personally would skip right over it and go for a Kia Forte5 SX hatch every time ... almost a hot-hatch, also available with a manual (I think maybe through ‘16 model year), good warranty and they can be found for even less money than what the iM costs.
It works all the time ... you do realize that the AC compressor pulley spins all the time (as it’s driven off the crank pulley) but the compressor itself only runs when the clutch engages (hence why it has the clutch)?
