As I understand it, she was originally just a glorified extra—Troop Leader #13, that sort of thing. But Christie wowed the producers and the publicity shots of a silver Stormtrooper generated a lot of buzz, so they beefed up her part in reshoots and made plans to give her more of a meaningful role in Episode VIII.
