The first Despicable Me movie was a genuinely good film. Gru finding his humanity and the girls learning to trust him made for a much better movie than what the commercials made it out to be. The other movies sure were movies.

I dunno. Their bottom line is making money on things they already on, and the Harry Potter IP is making them a ton of money. Would it make them MORE money if she just kept her mouth shut? Sure. Will it still make them a lot as it is? Yes. Diminishing returns are still returns.

The books are good! Rowling has a very good ear for dialogue, her settings feel lived-in (even if her actual worldbuilding collapses under even the slightest scrutiny), and she cleverly made each book a little mystery rather than a straightforward fantasy narrative. There is a reason the books are/were so beloved.…

This is going to sound like a backhanded compliment, but I actually mean it. Each of the Harry Potter books really feels like it takes place over the course of an entire year 

She got rich and famous by writing a very easy to read pastiche of a bunch of other works, thus she has an outsized sense of her own talent and importance. 

The 6th movie was beautiful as well (if under-written—they left out all that wonderful Gaunt backstory). The segue from Hermione sobbing in Gryffindor Tower to her setting the birds on Ron to the passing exterior shot of Ron and Lavender kissing on the stairs and ending with Draco brooding is just brilliant, IMO. Um, go run out and watch the series. It’s literally one of the best adaptations I’ve ever seen. The changes they make are very smart to help tell the story, nothing done just for the hell of it.
