This is true, and I have owned my own cable modem for about 10 years. What I didn't realize, however, is that it was actually severely limiting my speeds! I was getting about 20Mbps, and comcast said I should be getting 50Mbps. I got a new modem and did a speedtest and was getting 120 Mbps!
