Yeah. I have been looking and will continue to look out for those three. Especially Burning. The AV Club staff isn’t alone in loving that one.

re: X-Men First Class - admittedly I haven’t seen it since it came out, but I’ve always felt disappointed that they didn’t really continue that style after that movie. They didn’t really need to fix the incongruities between First Class and the first 3 movies and should’ve just kept with the idea of being a reboot,

I’ve always seen Hell House as a strange sort of kinkier sequel to Hill House.

Wildy different cases, Kavanaughn and CK. For a number of reasons, but primarily amongst them: Kavanaugh is running to be a public servant where as CK is not.

Great point and great quote.

I miss that SOB...and remember Zodiac MotherFucker? I know he’s on twitter or some shit but it ain’t the same.

Tobias is still getting good play but he’s freelance, just like Keith Phipps. There’s a difference between folks doing good work and writers having a home that encourages and nurtures that work. Not having one at all sucks, having one but seeing it dismantled is a goddamn shame.

Me not can say much that not has already been said by others already and with better grammar. But Sean was heart and soul of this site for 12 years, and as many changes as AVC has weathered in past few years, this might be biggest loss. Me just have to remind self that me still able to read other bygone AVC writers on

Me can think of no better tribute to O’Neal’s career than one last Big Red No.

We’ve lost a lot of the greats around here over the years. Rabin, Robinson, Murray, Koski, Tobias, Gillette. Hell, I’ll even throw VanDerWerff in there even though he infuriated me half the time. But no one’s absence will hurt quite like Sean’s.

then someone stabs a pitchfork into it.

It’s snarky and somewhat political, but it never reaches the sheer douchebaggery level of a Recognitions to put it mildly...

Hey Miller (Warren Oates here)...this really sucks but isn’t surprising. I can’t imagine how it feels to see your original concept and web site get forced to change it’s style and concept.

Just popping in here to also say goodbye and that while I’m excited for whatever you decide to do next, I will also miss your “For Our Consideration” pieces and the other critical writing you’ve done for the AV Club. I think all the focus readers put on your Newswire snark - and this is not to say those pieces weren’t

This is a weird one. A person I’ve never met, but for whom I feel great affection, just quit his job, and I’m really, really happy for this stranger.

Sean — I think I can speak for all of us salivating, rancorous, sewer-dwelling mutants when I say we’ll miss you. Thanks for the years and years of great work.

Sure, but the fact is that this series needed a course correction.

Speaking of lengthy director’s cuts and such, I wish Criterion would give that original cut of “The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford” a deluxe treatment, as the original version of the movie is nearly four hours, I believe. This original cut was only seen on the festival circuit.

  • I, too, was expecting a slow burn, atmospheric allegorical indie film. This is definitely not that. This is like The Exorcist meets Audition with the relentless dread of We Need to Talk About Kevin and the batshit House of the Devil ending.

Well, it’s the reason I can’t breathe through my nose, but can through my ears, so, yes, yes it is.
