How does the issue of “the court of public opinion” judging accused rapists relate to this proposal about the statute? I guess I don’t see how these two problems intersect for you.

I believe in most states murder has no statute of limitations. So there are crimes with no statute of limitations, with the more serious the crime, the lengthier the statute. Primarily so that if new, compelling evidence emerges, you don’t have a person who committed a crime walking around scot free.

The reason why I support this is because of the rape kit backlogs. As more and more of the kits are tested there is a good amount of proof there are serial rapists. At least in Michigan they’re testing kits well over 10 years old, if they find a pattern of a serial rapist in them there is a chance they won’t be able…

Given how many rape kits remain untested, the unreliability of police collaboration across jurisdictions, and the number of serial offenders discovered during recent backlog purges, this only makes sense.

I volunteered as a rape crisis counselor for 6 years. For sure, I can guarantee that the memories of the victims don’t fade.
