That's not what happened. They broke the last season up into two halves. Which means he had to go an extended period of time with no paycheck and he has a family to support. So he asked Vince if he could be killed off before a certain time so he could be available to take another show.

Um, it was already the last season of the show, they had broken it into two halves to stretch the thing out, and of course it makes sense to try to get into a NEW show where he's being paid more money, rather than stay a few more eps in a show that's being canceled.
