Yeah From what i hear just getting the GFB DV livens the car up dramatically. Nice thing about a Turbo car is with very little work you can improve the car and make it tons more fun to drive.
In theory any hardtop made for the new MX-5 should work with the 124 I’m pretty sure that whole area is identical. (note i have neither car so this is just a guess). But there are some aftermarket guys that are working on some cool stuff for the 124.

HE could look at a Fiat 124 Abarth or otherwise. The interior isn’t to bad, its turbo charged, rear wheel drive, has great driving dynamics. Its just like the Miata but Turbo charged. Seems like it would check most of his boxes. I’m sure you can get a slightly used Abarth model for around 25k at this point.

The Challenger has this same feature, it really only engages when you would (or should) normally skip second gear most of the time. Like others have said 20$ fixes that problem and it saves the car from the 1000$ gas guzzler tax.
