I kind of like the idea of two fundamentally evil people giving birth to an absolute, angelic good. It kind of makes sense in its utter lack of sense. (Plus, it feels like something Lynch would do.)

"It’s not like he’s an awful guy. He’s not a mean guy, he’s not an abusive guy. He’s just somebody who is very incapable in relationships and furthermore, what she senses correctly, is he’s very overwhelmed by how smart she is, how intense she is, how dramatic she is."
I wondered the same before watching, but in hindsight, I don't think "Spirited Away" and Miyazaki would be near-household names (maybe a BIT of an exaggeration, but) if they only appealed to film nerds.
You missed the point of what he was saying. He's not talking about actual, physical skin color… to be considered "white" in America is to hold a certain type of social privilege, the top of the social ladder so to speak. And Italian descendants in the 1940s didn't have that; as such, they were not considered "white"…
YES! I was introduced to him through the title track of The Lioness, actually. He's my favorite. Can't imagine how difficult it would've been if I had started listening to him before he died.
Really? I haven't listened to YFM for a while as every single time I've tried to get into it I've failed, but the production has always struck a strong negative chord with me.
