Well, just because it’s an optional legal procedure doesn’t mean that it feels any better to the family members who have already been cut out of the will (a hurtful thing in and of itself) to be forced into court to acknowledge the will by which they were disinherited.

Doesn’t sound like he had a Trust, which is so stupid. Anyone with any sort of assets should have an estate plan with a Trust and a pour-over will to avoid this exact situation.
