It sounds like you’re saying there are many factors in play in a primary, not just the structural advantages of a frontrunner in a big field; in which case, we’re in agreement. 

Yes, when you have a big field like in, say, 1992, 1988 or 1976, the insiders will always win; candidates with big, structural advantages like . . . Mike Dukakis? Bill Clinton? Jimmy Carter?

If only voters had a say and could choose from a dozen-and-a-half candidates.  So sad that Joe Biden will be forced upon said voters.
