I think it really helps that Barbie, while obviously another chunk of soulless commercial product, wound up meaning a lot to multiple generations of little kids who’ve now grown up. There are a ton of complicated feelings around her that are actually worthy of discussion and introspection! Can’t say the same for

Put those things together and they average out to art.

Yeah, that’s a trope that’s been used a lot — The Purple Rose of Cairo, Last Action Hero, Enchanted, etc. A character from an unrealistic universe comes to our world and is shocked to learn that the real world doesn’t work by such simplistic rules. It’s all a bit predictable, but hopefully they’ve done it well.

Imagine thinking “cancel culture” isn’t just people speaking with their dollars, and consequence for actions and words.

Man I remember when one of the renditions of this film featured I believe Amy Schumer and I'm sure that version would be slightly differently received.  Its amusing and surreal to see the guy who made Marriage Story and the woman behind Lady Bird working on a Barbie film but boy am I glad they did.  Guess those Lego

You seem like the sorta person who uses the phrase “cancel culture” unironically.

I am totally, unironically on board for a weekend of Oppenheimer and Barbie. No sequels, no movies-that-are-effectively-tv-shows. Proper Movies, yes.

You seem triggered

I like the front. Bold, different, and right.

There’s too much Lincoln Navigator going on with those alloys. They need to lean into the boxy styling a bit more and do it proud with some sick 80's Isuzu Impulse wheels.

Wish.com Landrover?

This is pretty damned close to the exact “discourse” I’ve seen at various points online.

I just love the idea that this dude thinks any significant number of adults care even a little bit about ::checks notes:: “the astroturfed success of a commercial product.”

Like, maybe he gets mad about “liboral” shit succeeding, but much of the rest of the waking world isn’t nearly so pathetic?

They’ve become so lazy/demoralized post-Trump. It used to be rightoids actually made liberals mad, now they have to pretend liberals are mad. Sad!

Right-wing media: “Hey! Here’s this action/drama about a federal agent who’s trying to stop child traffickers!”

Rightoids pretending liberals (or anyone) give a single shit about this turkey

This movie is “succeeding” the same way that L Ron Hubbard books sells.

lol it’s not a success, the numbers are wayyyyyy juiced up by the “pay it forward” bullshit they’re begging folks to do at the end. tons of reports of nearly empty theaters, but y’all hate to see anything that contradicts your insane worldview

Conservatives believing literally any stupid shit.

It wasn’t as good but it was still very enjoyable and that puts it well above Loki, or... god what are half the recent Marvel shows?  The one with Oscar Issac?
