A very thoughtful defense. But to your first point, the women in The Wild Bunch were either prostitutes by trade, treacherous members of Mapache’s concubine (including Angel’s former love, Teresa) or swooning, helpless victims in the bank and train robberies. Not a lot of agency or resourcefulness among the women in

“Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia” is an ugly piece of work”

Funny, I thought Rowling just really wanted to write a Doctor Who episode.  Newt is like the least charismatic Doctor ever.

I mean, it’s an art ranking. The wider the range of opinions you solicit, the more likely it is that, by definition, the quirky and oddball stuff is going to filter out in favor of the stuff that forms the bedrock of a film survey course.

Several years back, Harry Dean Stanton made a legendary appearance on Doug Benson’s podcast. By then in his late 80s, Stanton was as fascinating a character as ever, despite and/or because of being generally “out of it” and thrillingly indifferent to how he came off.

Nickelodeon is one of my favorite movies - Reynolds is part of why. He’s sweet, a little dumb, and very funny as a novice actor in the silent era. But even in that movie, when it came time for “serious” acting, he sure as hell handled it. (See also, as I’m sure others have or will point out, Deliverance, Starting

That movie achieves the impossible task of making Barbra Streisand sexier than Madeline Kahn.

Bringing Up Baby is RKO. Philadelphia Story was MGM.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Plays great to kids, as well! They love that car chase.

I grew up watching these movies. We had one independent channel and in the afternoons they had a matinee movie. Pretty much all classic movies.

Don’t forget Ball of Fire with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck and it’s doppelganger A Song is Born with Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo. Plots are the same and both directed by

That’s such a great movie - one of Sturges’s best, I think - and I’ve only seen it once. I really need to make time to watch that again. Thanks for the reminder!

For once? I’d have thought it was a dude more often than not. “It Happened One Night”, “His Girl Friday”, “The Awful Truth” (Ralph Bellamy seems to have been born to play this role), etc. TVTropes used to call that character “The Baxter” after the 2005 romcom told from the POV of one.
