It's based on energy systems. At lower intensities, your body uses a much higher percentage of lipids for fuel. as I sit here typing, and as you sit there reading, our bodies are getting fuel from almost 100% fat. As the intensity of the exercise rises, that percentage begins to shift to glucose.
