Absolutely agree. I grew up in a tiny town in Georgia further south than where the above incident happened and that ingrained, unconscious racism is APPALLINGLY normal. They think the only things that count as "actual" racism are lynchings, slavery, etc.. I have relatives who would very casually use the N-word around…

I witnessed a similar incident at a bagel shop in NYC I used to work at. One of my coworkers, who was Indian, had a grown man tell her he wanted his bagel "toasted to [her] color".
