I medieval folklore (and if you'd like a Disney example, Darby O'Gill and the Little People) Fairy's represent a force opposed to the power of the Church and God.  The priest in Darby O'Gill actually calls them "The powers of darkness" at one point.

The thing that bothered me was they had someone called King Midas on the show.  He's from Greek Mythology!

I think it is more likely Calvinball.

I think it's the 10 minute lunch breaks to eat slop, the 12 hour days, the "no raises ever" policy, and the many insults they get just for being Black that led to the strike.

And some new gold teeth.

Richard has basically been in a case of hopeless despair and self loathing since the war.  He considers the idea that any woman could ever love him to be an impossible dream.  That's why he went out to the woods to blow his brains out.
