I always recommend His Dark Materials and I'm not gonna stop now. The Sally Lockhart series (by the same author) is also very good (and was turned into a couple tv movies with Billie Piper and Matt Smith!)

S3's was really good with the finality of it all (no pun intended) and the dreamatorium #sixseasonsandamovie fadeout, so on one hand that would be a better end, except that Annie kinda got side-lined, which makes me prefer S2's slightly more.
