Fury Road is actually a great comparison. 2049 had too much reliance on the original, but also spent too much time setting up sequels.

Sadly the Rachel storyline was a big part of why this sequel failed at the BO. It relied too heavily, was too connected in its plot to the first Bladerunner, and WB vastly overestimated the degree to which that first film has sunk into the collective consciousness of a generation of filmgoers. I didn’t feel like Rachel in 2049 was that good. They got the easy details right, like the hair and the clothes, then they got you to focus on those bright red lips to keep you from noticing that her face itself was (to me at least) clearly a lookalike with cgi.

They should make this one. It’s really famous, guys!
