Someone is paying it though- in my case my mentor pays it out of the grants he gets from outside agencies (now why someone is paying my tuition in a program where I’m not taking classes is another whole can ‘o worms)

Graduate school is a lot different, especially in the sciences but other fields too. By working in a lab (or otherwise doing research/teaching depending on the discipline) you get tuition and a stipend paid for.
