I don’t understand where Sam’s critique comes from when the latest trilogy was a clear and blatant ripping of the Jedi Academy books.
Those books proved that you can create any story just from the basis of this established universe, and just add to it.

Hold up, under what perception are we working under that ANY of this material even came from the original trilogy?
The Kylo Ren films were all clearly taken from the Jedi Academy books, complete with the offspring of Han and Leia turning to the dark side.
They haven’t even begun to star wars.
