I agree with you. He was a musical genius. His soulful voice and depth in his songwriting, even at a young age, were amazing.

I dated a guy from Serbia in the early 90's. He told me that there were no gay people in Serbia. I asked why, and he said “Because we kill them”. I was horrified, and freaked out, and he said “I was just kidding” with a blank face. He was totally not kidding.
