I’m hopeful it’s because the writer only has physical contact with females on dates, and not at work!
I am of course, incredibly naive for someone as aged and bitter as myself.

I thought of that but A) those still hurt like a MoFo and B ) How would you distinguish between them and a normal hairtie? And C ) wearing hairties with business casual clothes isn’t usually that common. At least, i rarely see our BusDev or other nonscientists with hairties on their arms, but dudes and ladies with…
I do a similar thing, where i move one of my rings to a finger where it’s slightly uncomfortable to remind myself to do a thing. Normally i just repeat the thing i need to remember “bring more flasks into lab bring more flasks into lab” and then when i’m gloving up and see the ring, i remember to bring the damn flasks…
Not only that, but if you buy cars outright and never have a car payment, the chart advises you to buy a new car based on repair costs > payment. While i get that there is some amortization one should factor in when buying a car outright instead of financing it, just because i spent $400 on brakes this years doesn’t…
““They literally told me that if I hadn’t been drinking or hadn’t gone to the party, I wouldn’t be in this scenario,” Ballard said in an interview.”
“I did go to the party and i did have some drinks, and another human committed an illegal act completely unrelated to those two facts. The investigation and prosecution of…
I actually keep my work shoes at work, and change into my home shoes to commute. Now, as a chemist, it’s a cross-contamination issue - i feel badly tracking sodium nitrate or silica or whatever into a grocery store or onto public transport. My last pair of work shoes lasted 16 months before i looked down and realised…
I’m doing it because i can’t afford to have these coworkers feel this slighted. They need to know that we will stand up for them when it’s important, and that we value them even when management makes terrible decisions that affect them, without consulting them.
How management responds is on them, but we’re all aware…
So, based on #1, most difficult work conversations with middle and upper management should never occur? I mean, most of us know full well that standing up on behalf of someone who was ignored or slighted is not going to end with people being consulted on their wishes in the future. But not standing up for them feels…
Interesting. I find the oil that the Dr Bronner’s leaves behind to be incredibly clinging and moisturizing. In fact i can’t wash my hair with that at all, because of how much oil is left behind. Well, okay, once in a while i use Dr B on just the ends of my hair when it’s super dry, for just the oil residue benefit.
Routine? What is a routine?
Seriously, i’m in lab when the chemistry demands that i be in lab, and i’m at my desk when i have data to interpret or i have some time to kill between experiments. I do try to plan out my day in approximately 1 hour or 90 minute blocks, but under no circumstance can i plan my work around my…
This is more me. I had no idea people actually used all the stuff that is advertised - i thought it was all semi-invented marketing ploys.
I shower every 2-3 days, more in the summer, and i use Dr Bronner’s or Dr Woods on my face in the shower. Between showers i use 70 % isopropanol to get the worst of the residue from…
Well, taste and smell are highly genetically variable. As a chemist i know pretty well what classes of compounds i don’t smell at all, or barely (thiols, methylindoles, e.g.) but other classes i’m ridiculously sensitive to, that others around me can’t detect at all (pyrrolidine, tin, acyl chlorides).
Those symptoms are are pretty terrible, but i had them all (except tooth deterioration) BEFORE Essure. The ones that weren’t caused by birth control were either inherent in my genes, my lifestyle, my diet, or something else.
Yes, and not everybody can get one. I tried, and the measuring procedure was the most painful 5 seconds of my life; a full on 9 in pain. So, not a candidate for and IUD.
Which is fine because i’d wanted Essure all along, so i was thrilled and had the procedure done 3 weeks later. Of course, it only took me 10 years of…
Perhaps you’d like to weigh in on my dilemma:
I love peat. More than life itself. However, i have only found one scotch that is peaty enough for me to say, “this has peat in it”. Which is the Laphroaig cask strength. I tried Bruddichladdich Port Charlotte, and tasted zero peat, which was very disappoiting. I’ve seen…
I concur. Went to grad school for synthetic organic chemistry, and no way would i have any job satisfaction at all if i’d entered the workforce as just a BS level chemist. It’s a game changing experience, for good or for bad.
YMMV, of course. I do concede that everybody’s experiences are different. For me, however, the…
Under an hour? I allow myself 2 rotations of my alarm snooze to get ready, so that’s 18 minutes. 9 of that is bathroom/dressing time, and the other 9 is protein shake prep, and putting my lunch and workout clothes in my bag.
I do go over about once a week, but since i’m not on a timeclock i don’t stress it. When i was…
Yup. I’ve been completely over pro football for a couple of years now, despite being a fairly intense fan my entire life. ESPN sank very low on my list of respected entities this year too, and this is the final straw. I’m just so done with them now too.
Oh, this is actually great advice. I’m in week 8 of a brand new relationship that i think could be a long term thing, but i’m terrified that i’m ignoring red flags because i want this to work. So i think i’m being overly critical of his flaws as a self defense mechanism. Giving myself permission to see the flaws but…
This article read back to back with the “i collect action figures” article, and the articulate and helpful comments therein is a bit of a cognitive disconnect ;)
However, i do concede, that a mindful collection is absolutely not clutter, and does bring the owner happiness.
