Well, taste and smell are highly genetically variable. As a chemist i know pretty well what classes of compounds i don’t smell at all, or barely (thiols, methylindoles, e.g.) but other classes i’m ridiculously sensitive to, that others around me can’t detect at all (pyrrolidine, tin, acyl chlorides).
