It’s just standard British sports parlance. Useful midfielder, useful batsman, useful scrum half etc... Useful whatever. Just means “good” in that context.

You would be calling them by their English name in Spain. Athletic Club, that’s what they’re called. Seriously.

I’ve been told off by Spanish guys before for referring to them as Bilbao. “It’s Athletic Club, get it right”. Seems to matter to some of them anyway.
