I actually came here with the same question. There was this weird circular logic to that scene, and it didn't actually make any sense.

Hmm. I'd heard a lot of people saying that the show was influenced by the Miller run as well, so I was thinking about picking it up, but maybe I'll skip it. Sounds pretty terrible (and really, I've found that even Miller's best work doesn't age well).
I don't think it's a matter of difficulty. The food is just really cheap. For instance, a cheese enchilada is essentially Velveeta wrapped in a tortilla and drenched in cheese sauce.
