You are looking at it wrong. They weren’t dirty blankets. They were technologically advanced blankets developed to help the individuals raise their core body temperatures so they would be warmer.

To be fair I do think his point was that Italian explorers went to work for Spain (and Portugal too) because “Italy” didn’t hire them. Like, in his imagination, there are all these explorers hanging around but the “Italian” government cares more about cathedrals and won’t pay them. So he knew the first part.
