It's called trademark dilution. It happened to Kleenex, Dixie, and Ziploc, it can actually lead to companies losing their trademark in court, which is exactly what happened to Aspirin, Escalator, Thermos, Zipper, and Yo-Yo, which all used to be protected trademarks belonging to specific companies.
