On my 2016 WRX, you have to remove the battery and air box to get to the spark plugs, and they are in a slightly more ackward position then a I4, but they really aren’t that bad to do. Maybe add 20 more min to the job over an I4.

I would imagine a more environmentally solution would have been to Fine VW, so they learn their lesson, scrutinize all new TDIs, and make sure they meet emissions, and let the older ones remain on the road, without any fixes.
