That’s pretty harsh. You do your best with pets, but shit just happens sometimes. I had a rescue shepard/lab mix, and despite my best efforts, he made a few valiant escapes - friends opening my door; me slipping on ice; some idiot opening the dog park gate when it wasn’t safe to do so, etc.  

Collins is the best: his autobiography Carrying the Fire is a must read.  He was a funny guy (I’m sure he still is) and his personality really shines through.

You’d be surprised how many criminal defence lawyers genuinely believe in what they do. To get to that level you have to put in a lot of hard work and study, and most people who get to that level at least started out as idealists.
