If the climbers are in a crevasse, it’s extremely unlikely either a satellite phone or emergency beacon would have made a difference. They likely wouldn’t be able to pick up a satellite signal in there.

I’m a very un-generous person, but my first thought in these instances is how selfish it is to take these sorts of risks when you have young kids. That two-year-old will never know his/her father, because the father thought it was really important to climb up an ice cliff.

Of course this was not how he envisioned this climb going but would it be fair to say that climbers like him are a tad bit suicidal?

I can relate. On way to work today my shoe became untied. I faced the uncertain fear of stopping to tie it and risk being run over or push on. I decided to press on in constant fear of possibly tripping. Barely made it.
