Here's an amazing idea, assume every copy shipped will sell, then make sure your servers can handle the load of all of them being online simultaneously. Assume player participation will drop precipitously and lease hardware as required. It's not fucking rocket science.

why don't these companies short term lease a server farm for the first month or so when a game like this comes out? Then, once they have a good idea of peak load, scale back to that.
