More than give those things up. If they left the union on a peaceful basis, they’d have to buy all the federal assets within their borders. Presumably, that would require a huge amount of government bonds and huge tax increases  to carry the debt load.

Agreed. A narrow margin of victory is less than five percent. If you lose by less than five percent in a race for Congress, you may be able to get outside funding for a second attempt.  No professional political operative considers about nine percent, or about 86 percent to be narrow margins.
