I didn’t think they had a choice, either, but this is POTUS in the Upside Down. I’ve read multiple reports of him trying to force the Secret Service to defer to his private security, and I wondered if this might have been the case.

I don’t believe the Secret Service has a choice. They don’t really work at the pleasure of the president. They work for the country as a whole to protect the chief executive. So I don’t think Trump can say “you guys take the night off, my private guys can handle things.” If there is a threat, they’re taking him…
