‘I don’t know why “straight to video doesn’t have to suck any more” seems to have short-circuited so many people.’ This is it in a nutshell. Too many 80s/90s/00s filmmakers who assume a film not having a theatrical release is an indication of its lack of quality. It should not be difficult to adapt to this very simple

Man, I miss when Chapelle was just . . . funny.

No, he made a strawman claim that it’s acceptable for society to stereotype everyone except Jews. Which is BS because the exact group of “wokesters” he targets find it equally unacceptable to call Blacks a gang, Italians a mob, or Jews a “cabal”. There’s no one who does that except you know, the White Supremacist bros

...yeah, while I generally try to avoid commentary on lawsuits and the like, given how they can frequently lean heavily on legal technicalities and I don’t have any skin in the game anyway...

He sure does say a lot of transphobic and antisemitic things for someone who isn’t “anti-trans” and “anti-jew”

When someone says “I’m as leftist as one can be...” you know you’re about to hear the most MAGA-ass opinion you’ve heard all day. It’s just another version of “I’m not racist, but...”

I don’t see how she’s wrong. She’s obviously talking about the Strong Female Lead(tm), not powerful women in the abstract.

Yeah, it doesn’t really work because we know Chappelle is smarter than this. If some other comic did a bit about how black neighborhoods were frequently more dangerous than white ones and then suggested they’d get in trouble for talking about it, Chappelle, along with everyone else, would instantly know what they were

The comedy entertainment industry is doing fine. Probably better now than any point in the past.

“I’m as leftist as one can be-”

Chappelle has straight-up said in some bits that, essentially, other marginalized groups in America need to line up behind Black people before they can air their grievances. I believe he said as much in the 2016 post-election show, in the context of feminism.

Dave Chappelle was just tone-policing Ye’s antisemitism while reinforcing his beliefs with a “but we all kind of agree with him, right?” Even several comments in this thread reflect that all Dave Chappelle did was reinforce bigots and teach them to be more polite about being bigots.

I think the problem people have with your view (or more the way you present it) is you do so as a logic problem where everything is a zero-sum game. It misses the entire problem in the debate which is a lack of empathy or willingness to look for empathy. It’s the desire to score points off the other guy, to reduce it

Oh look just somebody on the Internet stripping all the context and nuance out of an event so they can blame the victim for reacting.

And it’s not gonna be because we stop making jokes about men scientifically masquerading as female.

The person you originally replied to consumed it! They watched it! So weird to spend all this time lecturing people who have already done the thing you purport to want them to do.  (Not to mention spending all this time lecturing people about a freaking SNL monologue.  I’m glad you found it thought provoking, but

I don’t know how well you can tell whether someone has an “open mind”based on the fact they have a strong opinion that you happen to disagree with. But more basically, who cares?  The person you replied to never claimed to even have an open mind, whatever that even means in this context. And why would it matter?  Why

Chill. The guy you’re responding to watched the monologue, and that was his takeaway. I don’t think he’s just writing anyone off. People like you are so fucking sensitive over any criticism.

His entire monologue was thinly veiled “whining unfunnily about his own personal grievances at getting criticized”. That's ALL it was.

I’ve seen a LOT of lazy takes from media reviewers claiming Chappelle “mocked” Kanye and Kyrie. He did no such thing. In fact, he basically agreed with them. All he did was whine about how they’re being punished ‘for saying out loud what everybody thinks’. Chappelle has no problem with anti-semitism, as long as it’s
