Three minutes before I posted mine, so it hadn’t loaded when I was writing.
I’m giving ultimate benefit of the doubt to make the point that he at worst just has to live a normal life, and the notion of considering that “punishment” just shows how much leeway we give celebrities and rich people.
Let’s say he did everything he’s accused of. He emotionally abused someone and raped someone else. These are bad things! But are they so bad the person has to be thrown away forever with no chance of rehabilitation?
Also I don’t know if his kink was “inappropriate,” exactly. “Inappropriate” kink is, like, stuff to do with kids or kid imagery or animals. Other kink is just kink. It’s all “inappropriate.” If it was appropriate it would be regular sex.
I felt like the end was the weakest part of the show in a way that somewhat diminished the impact of the rest of it, but I know I’m in the minority on that.
The Suspiria remake is definitely lighting the path for this one, but that had the benefit of being done by a fascinating director with an incredibly solid vision rather than... well, the director of Smile.
Like I said, it’s still a dumb take.
Oh yeah everyone in the show got was dumber and more cartoonish over the years, to the point where later seasons could joke about it. But savvy people have still bet on things way dumber than the urban sombrero.
I could see his argument coming from the perspective of someone who appreciates offensive comedy, and is friends with comedians who have more questionable material.
Fashion is frequently dumb and capricious. She thought she could play the game.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated Emma Stone is starring in “Checkmate.” Stone’s production company Fruit Tree is only producing Fielder’s directorial feature debut.
I could maybe see the argument that it’s more noticeable since the film’s title highlights it, but yeah even with that “why does a Gen Z white girl have a slightly unusual name” doesn’t strike me as a terribly compelling mystery.
For Skinamarink (and to an extent Beyond the Black Rainbow) I tend to think they’re movies you either vibe with or you don’t, and there’s not really any amount of explanation or discussion that can shift things either way. It really works for me on a primal level... experiment or not, my reasons for liking it are it…
I do remember that! Which is probably why the article (and the interview it’s skimming content from) also goes over it.
Funnily enough, to the degree that I enjoy mother! at all it’s because I find it wholly sincere. Aronofsky comes by his insane gnostic imagery and tales of obsession descending into madness honestly (it’s been a constant going all the way back to Pi). It’s a pretty huge misfire for a myriad of reasons, but I never got…
I don’t think earnestness is a determining factor of whether something is good or bad, but it is an element that can make a film more or less enjoyable / palettable. It’s one of the reasons Neil Breen’s output remains entertaining while Tommy Wiseau has just become exhausting, and it can go the other way where ironic…
I mean, they also talk about why they think Aggro Dr1ft and The People’s Joker and Skinamarink work artistically. They might not be your (or many peoples’) cup of tea, but the people who like The People’s Joker laughed at it and the people who liked Skinamarink found it scary. They’re not just highfalutin’ flicks…
Em’s been trying to offend people and then complaining about people trying to silence him for his entire career, especially in his Slim Shady persona which this is explicitly a return to / culmination of. Actually being shocked by any of it is just playing into his hands.
The original Exorcist did a pretty good job being about (in the first half anyway) the terror of being in the hands of an impersonal medical apparatus, and in the second half being about either the fear of losing a child to their own autonomy or a child losing their autonomy, depending on the angle you approach it…
