It’s mainly because we’re used to it, and subconsciously expect it to be look that way, that it looks better to us. They wouldn’t have thought anything unusual of it.

Actually, there’s a whole ton of detail we’re missing because the colour is gone - they did a lot of their detailed work in the paint, rather than in the sculpting itself.
