A Wizard Of Earthsea, by Ursula K. LeGuin. First fantasy novel I read featuring a hero who rises from lowly beginnings to become one of the most daunting and powerful wizards in fantasy literature...and also happens to be a person of color.

Other commenters have already mentioned this, but this book actually helped me not only with drawing, but consciously changing visual perspective. Bad science, but significant results; I went through the course and improved my drawing immensely.
