I dunno, maybe a complete and utter inability to believe the audience perceived a black woman as the lead character of their show? Coupled with an unwillingness to write an interracial romance, even though the audience was clamoring for it?

Naa, I’m afraid that I’d write a female character with her own storyline and motivations and the powers that be would be like “OK, but how about this for a fresh idea to shake things up? She dies to provide angst and motivation for the male lead!” And then it would just be screams and garden weasels all the way down.

It’s interesting. If it had been canceled after one season, it would probably have a decent cult following lamenting how it had ended too soon. We’ll never know if all of those one season wonders would have continued to be good - but maybe it’s better they had the one great season and never had a chance to do...…

A huge mass of people in Detroit did exactly that when the auto industry moved South. Nobody’s saying it’s easy; we’re saying why do the coal workers get to sit tight and demand the jobs come to them, when the rest of us have to move to Tennessee or wherever?
