Depending on the severity, flooding can absolutely fuck up a house. Obviously, your carpets, drywall and insulation will be ruined. Floorboards and any other wood will be warped and possibly rot. I'd probably use it to pay off debts, save enough for an emergency fund (enough to live on for a couple of months in case I lost my job or had to move out of town on short notice), and any remainder I'd invest in some kind of fairly low-risk stocks.
