To be fair, that one interview with Major Nelson was contrary to other interviews. When official sources contradict each other it makes it look like they have no idea what they are actually doing and makes you doubt everything they've said.
I think it's still perfectly acceptable for developers to say "No, I make real games" when someone asks if their new product is a spam-your-friends app masquerading as a game.

The "family mode" that the xbone fanboys were claiming would be amazing? It was a timed demo mode between 15-60 minutes, with limits on numbers times you could do it.
