“Breaking the Waves” is a great film, and one of Von Trier’s best. It is pretty rough, though; “Dancer” might be more cruel, though. I hesitate to recommend his stuff, especially after the harassment allegations and his unwatchable most recent movie.
I’d personally rank “Traffic” at 1, but I have not seen either “Yi Yi” or “Beau Travail.”

IIRC, it was in response to a recent national tragedy (a shooting, I think).
Never called her a “real sweetheart,” but your interpretation of the scene doesn’t jive with the performance or direction. If she was as bad as some seem to suggest, she would’ve kept pushing the family line instead of hanging up. The reveal of the mother’s status was already covered in this thread.

Wahlberg is great in The Departed, stealing many scenes and handling a lot of memorable dialogue. What’s weird is that, due to Hollywood political shenanigans, he was the only person nominated from that amazing cast.

It’s essential and plays for any age. It’s a story told from a child’s POV, not a movie made for children only.
