I dunno. Ryu and Ken wear traditional Gis. Sagat wears attire that is largely a traditional Muy Thai get up (has a few alt costumes taking that them even further in Ultra). At least those two example mirror real world outfits for those disciplines.

I think Karin is a great example of a good costume. Same with the Chun example you mentioned (Alpha Outfit I think). Laura's is unnecessary.
