I disagree with the Forester, completely. If this was a question of which cars got worse than their predecessors, maybe. The Previous Generation Forester was incredibly safe, well-built, and offered things that no others in it's class offered: massive sunroof, standard AWD, etc.

I can't say it looks bad. Hell, if it's still as grounded to the ground as the old one, count me in.
I don't know if Amtrak counts as public, but I booked a trip from New Haven to Baltimore for Thanksgiving. It's usually a very pleasant 4.5 hour ride in the Quiet Car, where I get a lot of work done.
Perhaps the 2003-2006 model. 2007-2011 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick.
