My bad, you are correct. Challenge mode was released with the December update with SRL. I was thinking of CE HM, which was January of 2015.

They don’t want to do this when the Raid is still new (Challenge Mode was released in January), they want people to experience it as a community and discover strategies on their own, rather than just watching the devs do it.
