I think you are on to something! Seems like things got a little “iffy” in late 2015 and then really took hold and went “bigly” in January 2016 but hey there was “very fine people on both sides” of that development.

A much better proposition would be to take a page from the very comics that inspired these movies and series, and adopt a looser set of guidelines in which the TV shows don’t need to address the matter every time a giant wormhole appears in the sky, or whatever.
