The first segment is an odd note to start on considering people tuned in for a generational family show. I do agree it wasn't that funny, overall it was just an enjoyable enough to give it a shot.
I picked this as well because the trailers look terrible, the premise is too dumb, and it doesn't sound like it could live past one season. However, considering the lukewarm reception, I could see it getting extended order.
The most exciting thing about this pilot is that it involves the sergeant from Enlisted!

I think that proposal makes sense for comedy. Once you nail down a character, it's guaranteed to stay the same throughout the series. Drama is a very different thing, though.
